Sighting Would Be First In Over A Century

SHIRLEY, Mass. -- Is a mountain lion roaming the town of Shirley?

The town's public works director and police chief are among the residents who say they've spotted a mountain lion, an animal which hasn't been definitively seen in Massachusetts since 1858.

Public Works Director Joseph Lynch told The Boston Globe he saw the wild cat twice. He described it as a beige creature up to 7 feet long with a round face and pointed ears.
The Massachusetts Environmental Police sent an officer to the town about 50 miles northwest of Boston to look for the animal, though state officials doubt it's a mountain lion.

Lisa Capone, spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, said previous mountain lion sightings always end up being another animal -- including a bobcat or even a large dog.
