When I was deployed, I actually made out better, because I was getting BAQ, combat pay, some other trinkets, plus no state income tax, and I had absolutely zero expenses....my car was paid off, and I had to break my lease (legally).

When I was a lowly part time dispatcher, we had a guy deploy. Interestingly enough, they just couldn't seem to figure out contract language regarding deployment pay, so they gave up and paid him 100% of his regular salary on top of whatever the Army was paying him. I suspect the about of time spent to try to interpret the language was slightly less than it took me to compose this reply.

When I deployed tax-free overseas as an E-7 on Title 10 my total income was better than my self-employed, self-insured civilian pay. Now you'd have to double my military pay to even come close.
