MARLBOROUGH - A 17-year-old appeared in court yesterday to answer charges he led officers on a car chase that ended when he intentionally slammed his Toyota into a police car.

Mario Raul Cor Diaz of 8 Hudson St. was arrested Friday at about 10:40 p.m. on multiple charges, including assault with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon after he narrowly missed hitting one police car before striking another.

Police Chief Mark Leonard said Detective Stephen Lupien was treated at Marlborough Hospital on Friday night after Diaz's car struck Lupien's police car.

Police Officer Timothy Harpin saw Diaz drive his Toyota sedan through stop signs at Washington and Prospect streets and at Lincoln and Highland streets, according to a report filed at Marlborough District Court.

Harpin turned on his blue lights, but Diaz instead ran another stop sign and turned the wrong way on Fremont Street at speeds between 30 mph and 50 mph, according to the report.

After Diaz returned to Highland Street, he accelerated toward an oncoming police car and crossed into the car's lane. The two cars avoided colliding when the officer swerved out of Diaz's way, according to the report.

Diaz then crashed into Lupien's police car and was arrested.

He was arraigned in Marlborough District Court on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon (car), assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (car), driving without a license, driving recklessly and failing to stop for police. Diaz was also cited for speeding, failing to stop/yield and committing a wrong-way violation.

Diaz was released yesterday after posting $300 cash bail set by Judge Andrew D'Angelo. His next court date is an Oct. 2 pretrial hearing.
