MANSFIELD - A police patrolman has been suspended with pay after being charged with drunk driving and leaving the scene of an accident last week.

Shortly after midnight on Oct. 11, off-duty Officer William Kelly allegedly sideswiped a vehicle parked in front of 291 North Main St. before striking a fire hydrant in front of 375 West St., police Lt. Walter Crickard said.

Police followed skid marks from the accident scene to an apartment building at 792 West St., where Kelly's truck was found to have substantial damage, according to a police department news release.

Kelly was not located until later that morning, Crickard said, adding that there were no injuries reported in either accident.

Crickard said Kelly has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving to endanger and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in property damage. The department has placed Kelly on administrative leave with pay pending a disciplinary hearing Oct. 28 with Chief Arthur O'Neill, Crickard said.

Attempts Friday to reach Kelly, whose phone number is unlisted, were not successful.
