BRANDON, Miss. --
A man who shot two Pearl police officers was convicted on Thursday following a three-day trial.
Madison and Rankin counties’ District Attorney Michael Guest said that Kirk Mayers was found guilty of aggravated assault on two law enforcement officers, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
On May 5, 2006, the two officers, who were part of the Pearl SWAT team, were executing a search warrant on a Rankin County apartment complex after they learned that stolen guns and drugs were in the apartment, Guest said.
After knocking on the door and announcing themselves numerous times, the SWAT Team was forced to break through the door, Guest said. Once the door was forced open, several shots were fired by Mayers, hitting two Pearl police officers. One officer was hit in the leg and the other in the hand. The officers have since recovered from their injuries.
Law enforcement officials later learned that the firearm used had been stolen in a house burglary, Guest said.
Mayers is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 10 in Rankin County, Guest said.
