LEOMINSTER - Said Salles says he was just trying to protect his wife and property when he used an aluminum baseball bat to bash the head of a man trying to break into his home.
But he also left a clue that helped lead police to a suspect.
Police on Sunday arrested 24-year-old Alexander Hernandez in a hospital emergency room where he was being treated for a head wound.
The 61-year-old Salles tells the Sentinel and Enterprise that he had "an obligation" to protect his wife when he noticed a head poking in the kitchen window on Sunday afternoon. So he grabbed his grandson's bat, whacked the suspect, then chased him down the street.
Hernandez was ordered held on $5,000 at his arraignment Monday when he was charged with breaking and entering. He also got 13 staples in his head.
