Driver Under Arrest After Crash

BRIGHTON, Mass. -- A man was killed after he was struck by a drunken driver while walking down the road in Brighton Sunday, Boston police said.

The accident happened at 3:09 a.m. near the intersection of Everett Street and Soldiers Field Road.

Police arrested Robert Finnerty, 26, of Charlestown and charged with him driving under the influence of alcohol. Finnerty and another passenger in the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee that he was driving were both uninjured in the crash.
The identity of the pedestrian who was struck has not been released.

WEEI guy charged in fatal crash

Pal: Alleged drunk was designated driver

The man accused of hitting and killing a young man while drunk on Soldiers Field Road was supposed to be the designated driver and is a flash guy for sports station WEEI-AM (850).
Robert Finnerty, 26, was coming from Game On in Kenmore Square around 3 a.m. when he hit Michael Riley, 19, of Cambridge, police said. Finnerty's passenger told police Finnerty "was supposed to be the designated driver," according to the police report.
The victim's mother, Barbara Riley, told the Herald her son was a "wonderful, caring young man" who loved his cats, Cupcake and Muffin, and stocked shelves at the Stop & Shop in Brighton. Riley was walking home when he was killed.
"He was just a nice kid. He wouldn't hurt a fly," Barbara Riley said. "I miss him terribly and that was a shock to find out what happened. He was only 19. You shouldn't be drinking and driving."
She last saw her son alive Saturday afternoon. "I said, 'I'll make you something nice for supper, don't be too late,' " Barbara Riley recalled.
Finnerty listed WEEI and NECN as his employer on his booking sheet. Metro Networks confirmed that Finnerty - who tried out for a weekend host job on WEEI - is an on-air employee who does sports news flashes for WEEI. Finnerty freelanced for NECN this summer, a spokeswoman said.
Finnerty was held on $25,000 cash bail yesterday at his arraignment on motor vehicle homicide and operating under the influence charges at Brighton District Court.
Police said Finnerty smelled of alcohol but told the cops he hadn't had anything to drink before confessing, "well . . . not a lot, maybe a glass of wine or something earlier." He lost his footing, stuttered, "had a look of panic in his face," and failed two field sobriety tests, police said. He's the second Entercom media figure to face serious charges this fall. Last month, ex-WRKO-AM (680) host Reese Hopkins was charged with child rape.
