Surveillance Video May Hold Clues In Shooting

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- A man was injured in an overnight shooting in New Haven, police said.

The man, identified as John Gutierrez, was transported to St. Rafael's Hospital after being shot in the area of Chapel and Day streets before 11 p.m. Monday.

Police said Gutierrez was shot three times from behind while walking down the street.

New Haven police said they believe that Gutierrez knows who shot him, but has yet to disclose the information to police. Police said they are hoping the incident was captured by a nearby surveillance camera.
Gutierrez's wife told Eyewitness News that her husband may have been shot in the stomach and the bullet may have exited through his back.

Police said that marijuana and crack cocaine was found on Gutierrez after the shooting.

The gunman was described as a 6-foot tall white or Hispanic man wearing a black jacket, hat and partial face mask. Police said the gunman fled on foot toward Edgewood Avenue, behind the Day Street School

Gutierrez remained in critical condition Tuesday morning.
