BROCKTON -
Kevin Brown first heard the pop.
Then he saw a silver car speeding toward him on Exchange Street.
"We almost hit," Brown said.
Within seconds, Brown learned a gunman had shot a man - then hopped into the car he just saw.
"I took off and tried to follow it, trying to get the plate number," Brown said.
But the car was gone.
The shooting victim, who was shot in the leg, hopped in a sports utility vehicle and drove to the Crescent Street fire station, where firefighters administered aid until an ambulance arrived. He was then taken to a local hospital for what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.
Fire Capt. Gerry Kenny was outside the fire station when the victim drove into the driveway, got out and said he was shot.
Other firefighters rushed out to try to stop the bleeding while police were en route.
What sparked the shooting was not immediately known.
One woman, who didn't want to be identified, was cleaning out a vehicle when she heard the shot and dove under the dashboard.
"It was scary," she said.
Another man said he heard a single shot, then saw the victim running out of the garage, bleeding profusely.
"It happened so fast," he said.
After the shooting in or near Eagle Auto body shop on Exchange Street, the gunman hopped into a waiting car and sped off about 2:40 p.m.
Police fanned through the city, searching for the gunman Wednesday afternoon.
