A 25-year-old man was targeted and gunned down on a Dorchester Street yesterday, while across town the families of those who suffered from violence remembered homicide victims in a solemn ceremony.
Police said the victim was hit multiple times in the back and pronounced dead at Boston Medical Center. He was shot on Florida Street and raced toward his family's home on King Street, where he collapsed steps from the front door.
A police source said the man once had been connected to the ongoing violence among Cape Verdean gangs and may have been affiliated with the Wendover Street gang. His identity is being withheld pending notification of relatives.
A family member said while the young man had been on the streets in the past, over the past year he had straightened out his life.
Investigators found a backpack near the dead man. Family members said the 2000 Brighton High School graduate was enrolled in Year Up, a program that instructs urban youths in technology skills and provides them with employment upon graduating.
Meanwhile, hundreds of people gathered at the Garden of Peace memorial downtown for the fourth annual program to honor homicide victims last night. Families were invited to place electronic candles in the stone garden.
