An Everett man is in critical condition after his throat was slashed during an argument on an Everett street yesterday afternoon, authorities and witnesses said.
"It's a miracle that he's alive," said Calvin Lawrence, 48, of Everett, who pushed bar rags against the victim's throat to sop up the streams of blood that poured from his wound. "He died. He died in our arms. I don't know how they brought him back."
Friends said the victim is a 36-year-old Everett man who stands 6-feet, 4-inches tall and weighs about 240 pounds. A look at the blood-splattered pavement Lawrence indicates his size is the only thing that saved him. Authorities said he was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was still alive, but in serious condition. A law enforcement source said one man is under arrest for the slashing, but the suspect's name was not available.
Lawrence said the victim, who the Herald is not identifying, had just left Derby bar on Ferry Street after he stopped to pick up his uncle there. Lawrence, who was inside the bar during the incident, said the uncle later told him the victim was backing his company van onto Ferry Street when two men passed behind the vehicle and he stopped short.
"One of the guys said something. (The victim) said something back and then he got out of the van and the guy slashed him," said Lawrence, who was inside the bar at the time. "He came stumbling into the bar, holding on to his throat gurgling. A bunch of us grabbed bar rags and tried to help him."
