Officials inspect a yacht at the Dorchester Yacht Club which burned overnight, killing an occupant.
Fire officials have identified the man who died in an overnight boat fire at the Dorchester Yacht Club as Melvin Conroy, who is from Pembroke and believed to be in his 60s.
Conroy died overnight in a fire on his 36-foot wooden pleasure boat called My Three Sons, said Boston Fire Spokesman Steve MacDonald. An initial investigation indicates that the cause of the blaze was accidental, he said.
MacDonald said a nearby boat owner called 911 at 12:42 a.m. today to report the fire.
"When firefighters were arriving on scene they could see the large flames in the air and they discovered a 36-foot wooden boat that was fully engulfed in flames," he said.
When firefighters extinguished the fire they discovered Conroy's body on board. MacDonald said Yacht club workers told investigators that Conroy was known to sleep on board.
The fire caused $20,000 in damage to the boat.
