Police shot and killed an armed Jersey City, NJ man in a sports utility vehicle early this morning during a motor vehicle stop, police reports said.
Markieth Singleton, 25, died after a police officer shot him twice in a rear passenger seat of a silver Mercedes SUV at Kennedy Boulevard and Greenville Avenue at 1:41 a.m. this morning, officials said.
According to police, the two officers pulled the SUV over after responding to an earlier report of a light-colored SUV being used in a robbery in the area earlier in the night.
Four people were in the car, reports said.
When police smelled drugs in the car, Singleton, who was sitting in the rear passenger side seat, said he had drugs, reached into his pocket, and pulled a .380-caliber "semi-automatic" silver handgun, officials said.
At that point, Police Officer Joseph Stelze began grappling with Singleton trying to take the gun away, police said.
Stelze's partner, Police Officer Joseph Cossolini then shot Singleton at least twice in the side, police said.
Singleton was declared dead at Jersey City Medical Center at 2:20 p.m., police said.
