Man crashes car while trying to roll joint

A 24-year-old Newark man whose truck was seen swerving across the roadway allegedly told an officer - after a pursuit - that he had been trying to roll a marijuana cigarette, New Castle County police said.
Shawn E. Jones, of the 500 block of E. Hanna Drive, was charged with drunken driving, possession with intent to deliver narcotics, disregarding an officer's signal, maintaining a vehicle for keeping a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, malicious mischief by a motor vehicle, reckless driving and no proof of insurance.

He is being held in the Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $13,500 bail.

Shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday, Officer Michael Bingnear was driving north on Salem Church Road when he spotted a pickup truck swerve across the two-lane roadway, said Cpl. Trinidad Navarro, a county police spokesman.

The officer tried to stop the 2007 Chevrolet Colorado near the Beck's Pond area, but the driver refused to stop and hit several street signs.

The pickup truck then ran off the road and nearly struck a large utility pole, then drove back across the road again.

Navarro said the driver refused to stop, but the crashes had left him with flat tires and fluid spilling from his truck, so he finally pulled over in the area of Reybold Road.

When Jones was taken into custody, officers found a partially rolled cigarette and 43 oxycodone pills inside the pickup.

Jones told police that he was trying to roll a joint as he was driving, Navarro said.
