Man convicted of molesting two girls
By Julie Manganis
Staff writer

SWAMPSCOTT - A Swampscott man has been found guilty of molesting two girls, who were 6 and 9 at the time.
John Aguiar, 50, of 83 Sargent Road was cleared of three counts of rape and a charge of disseminating obscene material but was convicted of 11 counts of indecent assault and battery by a Newburyport Superior Court jury following a nearly two-week trial.
He faces up to 10 years in prison for each of the 11 counts when he is sentenced on Oct. 29 in Lawrence Superior Court.
Aguiar was charged in 2005 after the girls, both known to Aguiar, came forward to tell police that he had abused them about a decade earlier. One of the girls had told police in 2003 about the incident but decided not to go further with the prosecution, until she learned about a second girl who had been victimized.
Aguiar, who has been free on personal recognizance since shortly after his arrest in 2005, was taken into custody in the courtroom yesterday and will remain at Middleton Jail until his sentencing.
