ATTLEBORO, Mass. -- A Rhode Island man accused of stomping to death a Canada goose and five goslings said he did it because he felt threatened by the birds.

Before he left for work Saturday, John A. Sanders asked his mom what would make her Mother's Day. She said she wanted to visit the zoo.

Instead, in a bizarre twist, Sanders, 33, spent the early part of yesterday behind bars in Attleboro on charges that he had fatally injured a Canada goose and stomped to death five goslings.

John A. Sanders, 33, was supposed to be arraigned Monday in Attleboro District Court on charges of animal cruelty and disorderly conduct. But News Channel 10's Larry Estepa reported that Sanders' lawyer was not present, and the judge continued the case until later this month.

Sanders, an industrial engineer from North Kingstown, was working at a Texas Instruments plant in Attleboro on Saturday. According to the police report, he was walking on the campus when an adult goose hissed at Sanders, who slipped and fell in mud.

"Angered by this fall, he began his rampage, chasing the goslings and kicking them," the report said.

A witness reported seeing Sanders running across the grass, shouting and stopping to jump up and down. The witness called police, who found two goslings flattened on the parking lot, and three more dead on the grass.

The adult goose, believed to be the goslings' mother, was taken to an animal hospital in West Bridgewater, where it was euthanized Sunday because its injuries were too severe, said Karen Harvey, Attleboro's animal control officer.

"I felt threatened, then when I slipped, I felt desperate because they were all around me," Sanders said in a telephone interview with The Boston Globe.

My life demonstrates that I'm not a callous, hard, uncaring sort of person," he said. "I'm heartbroken over what happened."

Linda Megathlin, a spokeswoman for Texas Instruments, said Sanders was a contract employee hired through Olsten Staffing Services.

This guy is a piece of SHIiiiiiiit! What really gets me though is this guy is charge with a felony for cruelty to animal which is a good thing and I do believe it should be a felony. However if he was to commit A+B on a police officer it would be a misdermeanor   Sorry I did not mean to get off the subject just making a comparison thats all

6 counts of 272/77

http://www.mass.gov/legis/laws/mgl/272-77.htm

shall be punished by imprisonment in the state prison for not more than 5 years or imprisonment in the house of correction for not more than 2 1/2 years or by a fine of not more than $2,500, or by both such fine and imprisonment.

I kinda like the idea of the $15,000 fine in addition to at least the HOC time, but I doubt that will happen.

Dispatch was getting calls all morning from residents wanting to know what the hell we were going to do with this guy.

He was terminated by his employer within two hours of his arrest...

I'm not positive but I heard they came to the station while he was in custody and gave him his walking papers and a trespass notice.

future serial killer? come on now be serious!!!! some friggin people...FUTURE serial killer!!!!! you people and your judgements! this guy is pretty sick though- oh yeah I would fear my safety to, look obviously dangerous this creature is alone, never mind a bunch of them!

this guy is 33, he is not a future serial killer, he is currently a serial killer, they just haven't started finding the bodies yet. this guy should be found guilty of being a puss! the only thing that could make this story worse is if it was a Chihuahua & her litter that made him fear for his safety. I mean i would be afraid to get nipped in the nuts, but not enough to chase down the creatures and stomp on them.

Boys nabbed for torturing chickens, blowing up frogs
By Franci Richardson
Saturday, May 14, 2005 - Updated: 08:58 AM EST

ANDOVER - Three middle-school boys were arrested after making a videotape of a ``joy kick'' where they blew up frogs with firecrackers and blow-torched chickens to death at a summer camp that for 41 years has acquainted children with nature.

``The way they came in and killed the chickens - I'm appalled,'' said Jim Loscutoff Sr., the star Celtics player who retired in 1964 and founded Evergreen Camp at the edge of the Harold Parker State Park the following year. ``It's a joy kick.''

One young man, whose name is being withheld because he is juvenile, admitted his involvement in the sordid crime. ``It started out innocent,'' he said. ``We just wanted the roosters to chase us so we threw sticks at them, but it got too far over the line. It was a stupid thing because those animals didn't deserve it.''

The boy's mother said he is grounded indefinitely.

``What he did,'' she said, ``is totally, totally unacceptable. I love animals.

``I cannot protect my son. It's really terrible. My first reaction was to tell police to take me in because I wanted to beat the (expletive) out of him.''

The recovered digital camera video shows the Doherty Middle School boys - 12, 13 and 14 years old - laughing as they ran around the 10-acre camp saying ``let's go kill this one over here'' as they violently whipped``defenseless little chickens'' with a fishing rod before they sprayed them with flames. They also struck the animals with lacrosse sticks.

The video also shows the boys spraying swastikas on frogs, cutting them open with a knife and then blowing them up by putting firecrackers in their mouths, Andover police Lt. Kevin Winters said.

``In the 30 years I've been doing this, I've seen a lot, but this is very disturbing to watch,'' said Winters, who has viewed the video.``They were kids on a vandalism spree.''

After they were arraigned on a slew of animal cruelty and vandalism charges yesterday in the juvenile division of Lawrence District Court, the boys were released to their parents
