A 33-year-old Providence man was arrested in Cranston yesterday after he caused and then drove away from a three-car accident on Route 95, the police said.
Michael Weis was driving north in a black Jeep when he tried to pass a black Honda Pilot by pulling into the high-speed breakdown lane, said state police Lt. Paul Olszewski.
The Jeep struck the rear of the Honda, which was in the high-speed lane, and the Honda then struck another Honda in the next lane.
The Jeep then fled the scene, but witnesses followed it off the highway, onto Elmwood Avenue, where Providence police helped to pull it over, Olszewski said. Weiss was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident and operating on a suspended license.
The drivers and passengers in the other cars - including an 18-year-old driver and five passengers in the Honda Pilot - suffered only minor injuries and refused medical treatment, Olszewski said. Weis was being held last night at the Lincoln state police barracks.
