NAUGATUCK - Police said a man fired several shots at a gas pump at a Sunoco gas station on New Haven Road Saturday morning, then fled the scene in a car and crashed twice before his car was disabled and he was taken into custody.

Police learned that the man pulled into the parking lot of the gas station in a silver car and fired shots into the side of a pump before fleeing. He drove north on New Haven road and hit another car about a quarter mile away, and kept going north until the final crash at South Main and High streets.

There were no injuries as a result of the shooting that happened around 7:30 a.m., but another driver received a minor injury in the first crash, and the suspect was injured when he crashed his car the second time, said Officer Ronald Pugliese, Jr.

No other cars were involved in the second crash, he said.

The suspect, who has not yet been identified by police, was transported to Waterbury Hospital for treatment.

Police recovered the gun at the scene of the second crash, Pugliese said.

The state police major crime squad is assisting in the investigation.
