Fall River -
A man was arrested after he allegedly tried to steal purses from two women inside the Price Rite Supermarket, 866 Pleasant St., Thursday.
Michael Taft, 43, of 275 Bank St., is charged with two counts of larceny from a person and one count of possession of a Class E drug.
Officer Keith Pires apprehended the suspect about 1 p.m. as he tried to scale a fence in the Cross Street area, said Sgt. Thomas Mauretti.
A 77-year-old Fall River woman and a 44-year-old Dartmouth woman said Taft tried to take their purses from their shopping carriages in separate incidents.
After allegedly failing to get the older woman's purse, which she had affixed to the carriage's child seat, the suspect reportedly attempted to steal the other woman's pocketbook, Mauretti related. The younger woman managed to grab her purse back, he said.
In both instances, the women told police, Taft advised them, "I thought it was my wife's carriage," Mauretti said.
Surveillance video footage of the incidents confirmed the women's statements, he added.
At the police station, numerous Klonopin pills were found in Taft's possession, Mauretti said.
