ATTLEBORO - A 20-year-old man was arraigned Thursday on charges he stole a purse from a 67-year-old woman in the parking lot of the Super Stop & Shop on Pleasant Street in Attleboro.

Adam J. Carine Jr., who lives on the third floor of 64 Emory St. in Attleboro, was ordered held on $5,000 cash bail after pleading innocent in Attleboro District Court.

Authorities say Carine swiped the victim's handbag from her shopping carriage as she and her 87-year-old mother were putting groceries in their car Wednesday afternoon.

The victim ran after the suspect, who was last seen running toward Cambridge Street.

Carine was arrested at gunpoint about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday on Horton Avenue after he was spotted by Patrolman Jermaine Patterson. Carine refused Patterson's orders to stop and was holding his stomach before dropping the purse, police said.

Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Thompson said Carine told police later that he was a drug addict and admitted stealing the purse.

"He was hoping to find money so he could buy drugs," Thompson argued during a bail hearing.

Patterson was assisted by officers Leo Fontaine, Michael MacNeil, Sgt. Brian Witherell, Capt. David Proia and Steven Beaudet.

Carine's lawyer, Paul Carlucci of Franklin, asked for a lower bail and court-ordered drug counseling for his client, arguing that Carine had a minor arrest record and was cooperative with police.

The case was continued to Nov. 17 for a probable cause hearing.
