NEW BEDFORD - State police arrested a city man following a slow-speed car chase down several side streets in the South End Monday afternoon.
Gregory Daniels, 53, was apprehended by city and state police officers after he bailed out of his vehicle on Roosevelt Street and ran to his house at 79 Rodney St., officials said.
State police trooper David Reis tackled Mr. Daniels after chasing him around the house. During the foot chase, the suspect allegedly threw an object, later determined to be a bag of heroin, officials said.
Police pursued Mr. Daniels while investigating an earlier report of a man on Beetle Street who was seen carrying a black firearm in his waistband. The suspect was described as a white man wearing a hooded sweatshirt. He was not found.
According to police radio transmissions, Mr. Daniels refused to stop and drove down East Rodney French Boulevard and turned onto Roosevelt Street. He changed directions and headed back toward Brock Avenue before turning again onto Roosevelt Street.
Mr. Daniels exited the car on Roosevelt Street and tried to flee on foot. By this time, several city police officers joined Trooper Reis to locate the suspect.
After apprehending the defendant, police said found a small bag of heroin inside his vehicle.
Mr. Daniels will be arraigned today in New Bedford District Court on charges that include failure to stop for police, leaving the scene of property damage, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, speeding, marked lanes violations, and possession of a Class A substance with intent to distribute.
