Pruenca Freed After Court Hearing

JAMESTOWN, R.I. -- Police have accused a Jamestown man of scamming a woman out of more than $6,000 by pretending he was a Boston Red Sox talent agent with access to baseball tickets.

Charles Pruenca was freed after a court hearing Wednesday. He is charged with three counts of obtaining money under false pretenses.

State Police Lt. Col. Steven O'Donnell said the scam started in July when the 38-year-old man offered to get a woman tickets for regular season and playoff games. She paid nearly $6,400.
When the tickets never arrived, Pruenca told the woman he was being treated for cancer.

Police said Pruenca does not work for the team and has not sought cancer treatment.

It was unclear if Pruenca had an attorney. No one answered the phone at an address listed under Pruenca's name.

More charges for RI man who posed as Red Sox scout

JAMESTOWN, R.I. -- Authorities say more people have reported being scammed by a man who allegedly took thousands of dollars by posing as a Boston Red Sox scout and a cancer victim.
Charles Pruenca was arrested at his Jamestown home Tuesday on charges of obtaining money under false pretenses and delivery of a fraudulent check over $1,000. He was to be arraigned Tuesday.
State Police said the 38-year-old Pruenca took roughly $100,000 from a person by claiming he was a Red Sox scout who could get season and playoff tickets.
He also was arrested on Nov. 5 on similar allegations.
State Police Lt. David Neill said he did not know if Pruenca had an attorney.
