Fall River -
A man acquitted of murder charges about 10 years ago was arrested Thursday night and charged with illegal firearm offenses.
Michael J. Holloway, 28, of 865 Plymouth Ave., was arrested on Spring Street about 11:15 p.m. after Officers Brett Kimball and Gregory Wiley stopped the car he was riding in.
Police spokesman Sgt. Paul Bernier said officers stopped the vehicle because they knew the registered owner was wanted on a warrant.
During the stop, Kimball noticed a rear seat passenger, later identified as Holloway, moving around suspiciously, Bernier said.
The five occupants were ordered out of the car and police recognized some as being Mafioso street gang members, Bernier said.
When police told Holloway to end his cell phone call and get out of the vehicle, Officer Michael Silvia yelled "gun." Kimball subsequently retrieved a loaded .40-caliber semiautomatic pistol from Holloway. Police also took two knives from Holloway.
He is charged with carrying a firearm without a license, defacing firearm serial numbers, unlawful possession of ammunition and firearm violation with one prior violent/drug crime.
Holloway was indicted in 1999 on charges of murder, home invasion, unlawful possession of a firearm and conspiracy to commit armed robbery in the shooting death of Cecil Smith Jr., 39, of Brockton, at 105 Pine St. He was acquitted, police said.
