Prosecutors Say Man Strangled, Attacked Victims

BOSTON -- An Allston man will face charges Friday in connection with the rapes of women that he allegedly lured into his apartment, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley.

Paul Carmichael, 38, was indicted earlier this month on two counts of aggravated rape, two counts of kidnapping, three counts of assault and battery and one count of aggravated assault and battery for allegedly raping and beating two women in his apartment at 198 Allston St. in July.

Boston police detectives and Suffolk prosecutors are working to determine whether there are other victims who have not yet come forward.
"What we've heard from the victims in this case paints a picture of absolutely chilling sexual violence," Conley said. "If there are other women who were victimized but unable or unwilling to come forward previously, the prosecutors and victim advocates in my office are committed to supporting them."

Carmichael allegedly raped the first victim, a 28-year-old Brighton woman, on July 5 and the second, a 25-year-old Cambridge woman, on July 22. Prosecutors allege that Carmichael lured both women to his second-floor apartment, where he held them against their will, beat and strangled them and forced himself on them.

Prosecutors said that Carmichael approached the first victim near the intersection of Commonwealth and Harvard avenues on the morning of July 5. After following the woman and making overtures that she rebuffed, Carmichael allegedly approached her, grabbed her wrists and shoulder. He allegedly forced her onto Allston Street and into his building.

Once they were inside his apartment, Carmichael allegedly attacked her. The woman told investigators that she tried to run out of his apartment. She said he grabbed her, threw her onto an open futon and strangled her. Carmichael allegedly raped her in the apartment.

Following the attack, the woman went to the Boston Police District 14 station, from where she was taken by ambulance to an area hospital.

On the night of July 21, Carmichael allegedly approached the second victim in Cambridge's Central Square. That woman had seen Carmichael in the neighborhood before. After inviting her to see a band at a nearby nightclub, Carmichael allegedly hailed a cab, telling her they would go to Harvard Square. The victim joined him but the cab ultimately dropped them off at Carmichael's building instead, prosecutors said.

The victim started to leave Carmichael's apartment when he allegedly cornered and raped her. When the attack concluded, the victim was able to leave the apartment and hail a cab.

Like the first victim, she was able to make her way to the District 14 station, where she reported the attack. She was also subsequently treated at an area hospital.
