AUGUSTA, Maine -- A Superior Court judge will consider a challenge to Maine's sex-offender registry law by more than two dozen plaintiffs who are known in their suit as John Doe.

Those suits, and possibly more to be filed, have been consolidated into a single lawsuit in Kennebec County Superior Court. It could be months before Justice Michaela Murphy takes up the case.

The anonymous sex offenders seek to have their names removed from Maine's online registry because they were added long after their original sentences had been served.

The Legislature three years ago required those who had been convicted of sex crimes between 1982 and 1992 to register as sex offenders, adding hundreds of new offenders to an already substantial list.
