PORTLAND (AP) -- The police chief in Maine's largest city is officially headed to Texas. Portland Police Chief Tim Burton will wrap up his tenure in Portland on Aug. 16, then he'll head south to take the top police job in the city of Odessa, Texas.
Burton, a Portland native, previously announced he'd accepted a conditional offer to go to Odessa. Deputy Chief Joseph Loughlin will serve as interim chief until a replacement is found.
Burton has led Portland's department since November 2005, when he succeeded Michael Chitwood, whose outspoken personality became well known across the state.
Mayor Edward Suslovic said Burton's "collaborative, quiet leadership" was key in getting the regional crime lab off the ground and in convincing officials to merge emergency communications services with South Portland and Cape Elizabeth.
