The acting boss of the New England Mafia - and younger brother and seat warmer of imprisoned North End mob chieftain Carmen "The Cheeseman" DiNunzio - is expected to be hit with a six-year stretch for racketeering when he's sentenced tomorrow by U.S. District Court Judge William E. Smith in Providence.
Anthony L. DiNunzio, 53, of East Boston was arrested in April on an indictment out of Rhode Island charging him with RICO and extortion conspiracy.
As part of a plea agreement he struck with federal prosecutors, DiNunzio pleaded guilty to the RICO conspiracy charge only in exchange for a recommended sentence of five to six years.

DiNunzio sentence sends 'powerful message'

A Rhode Island federal judge yesterday said he boosted the jail time for acting New England mob boss Anthony L. DiNunzio to 6 1⁄2 years behind bars to recognize the regional organized crime leader's role in running a scheme to extort protection money from strip clubs and intimidate potential witnesses.
Anthony L. DiNunzio pleaded guilty Sept. 13 to one count of racketeering conspiracy in connection with a plea agreement in U.S. District Court in Providence. Federal prosecutors recommended a sentence of five to 6 1⁄2 years. U.S. District Court Judge William E. Smith said the maximum was appropriate because DiNunzio was in charge.
"Anthony DiNunzio and his New England La Cosa Nostra subordinates used threats of violence to extort protection payments from business owners throughout the state, and his sentence sends a powerful message about the department's determination to hold Mafia leaders and associates to account," said Assistant U.S. Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer.
