A Jeanerette police officer is in critical condition after he was shot in the back early this morning during what investigators are saying was an ambush.
Shortly before 1:00 a.m., Jeanerette Police Officer Clay Landry responded to an anonymous call in reference to a possible fire in a Dumpster next to a business at Provost Street and Main Street.
Landry apparently arrived at the scene and was shot once in the back by a high-powered rifle.
Deputies responding to assist with the fire call found Officer Landry lying on the ground.
The bullet had penetrated Landry's ballistic vest.
He was transported to the Iberia Medical Center and is currently in the intensive care unit.
Investigators found evidence which indicated the shooter had been across the street about 120 feet away.
Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman Wendell Raborn said it was an obvious setup.
“It was definitely an ambush situation against law enforcement,” he said. “Maybe not against that particular officer, but it was a setup.”
Landry has been with the Jeanerette Police Department since August 2008.
