MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) - State police say that for the first time, Connecticut's sex offender registry has topped 5,000 names.
The sex offender registry was created in October 1998. In June, 36 new sex offenders were added to the registry bringing the number to 5,027.
The registry itself remains a heavily used Web site with an average of just over 900,000 hits a month. Information can be searching by last name, town, zip code or viewing the entire list of the sex offenders registered.
State police maintain the Web site and say that those who want information can have it without any cost and they can remain anonymous.
