LAWRENCE - A Lawrence police officer has been convicted of abusing two brothers he was arresting.
Officer Kyle Wilcox was found guilty on Tuesday of two counts of assault and battery following a weeklong bench trial in Worcester District Court.
The 30-year-old Wilcox, a four-year veteran, is scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday on misdemeanor charges for which he could receive up to 2½ years in jail for each count.
Moises and Rubenito Fernandez claimed Wilcox of beat them after their arrest during a tenant dispute in December 2006. Rubenito Fernandez said Wilcox forced him to the ground in the vehicle bay of police headquarters. Moises Fernandez said Wilcox hit him on the head with a hard object while he was handcuffed.

Convicted officer gets suspended sentence

WORCESTER, Mass. -- A Lawrence police officer convicted of assault and battery on two suspects he was arresting won't serve jail time after his two one-year prison terms were suspended.
Officer Kyle Wilcox will only be imprisoned if he violates terms of his probation under provisions of the sentence handed down on Wednesday in Worcester District Court. Those terms include anger management classes.
The charges stem from a December 2006 arrest of brothers Moises and Rubenito Fernandez during a tenant dispute. They say they were brought to the station, where Wilcox pushed Rubenito to the ground in the station's vehicle bay and Wilcox hit Moises across the head with a hard object while he was handcuffed.
The 31-year-old Wilcox, a four-year veteran, is on paid administrative leave.
