BOSTON HERALD

BY: DAVE WEDGE

Taking a cue from New Jersey and the tragic 2002 roadway death of an Army Major, lawmakers are considering a proposal to lock up drivers who drive and doze.

"It is my hope that such a law will prevent people from drowsy driving so no other family will have to endure such a loss" Amy Huther of Milford said yesterday of the June 26, 2002 death of her fiance, Maj. Robert Raneri.

Raneri 37, was riding his motorcycle on Route 3 in Pepperell, when he was struck head-on and killed by Christopher Chickering 19.

Chickering told police he had been up for 24 hours playing video games with friends and dozed off behind the wheel before the 6 am wreck. He got 5 years probation and lost his license for 10 years.

The Massachusetts Joint Committee on Criminal Justice is considering a law creating a new felony called Motor Vehicle Homicide While Sleep Deprived.

A Felony?!!!! WTF Hit and Run PI is not even a felony. In fact you cant even arrest for this unless it is or was done in your presence. My feeling is they should change the current laws they have before they decide to make new laws.
