Former U.S. Marine Jon Hammar is in a Matamoros prison in Mexico, charged with bringing an antique shotgun into Mexico. | Handout via the family/MCT

By Tim Johnson | McClatchy Newspapers
MEXICO CITY - As a U.S. Marine, Jon Hammar endured nightmarish tension patrolling the war-ravaged streets of Iraq's Fallujah. When he came home, the brutality of war still pinging around his brain, mental peace proved elusive.
Surfing provided the only respite.
"The only time Hammar is not losing his mind is when he's on the water," said a fellow Marine veteran, Ian McDonough.
Hammar and McDonough devised a plan: They'd buy a used motor home, load on the surfboards and drive from the Miami area to Costa Rica to find "someplace to be left alone, someplace far off the grid," McDonough said.

THIS is unacceptable:
The Customs and Border Protection agent said it was all right to take the shotgun, McDonough said, adding that the agent told them: " 'All you have to do is register it.' So they gave us a piece of paper and said, 'This is your registration. You've got to pay this much.' They gave us the piece of paper to give to the Mexican authorities."
No other president would tolerate this bullshit from a shithole that can't control their gangs.

Mother of Former U.S. Marine Jon Hammar Pleads for Help as Son Remains Chained to Bed in Mexican Prison on 'Trumped-Up' Gun Charges

The Hammars began receiving extortion threats shortly after their son's imprisonment. Olivia Hammar said, "This particular prison is controlled by the cartel, so he was in the general population and within 24 hours, we began receiving extortion calls from other cartel members."
"We think maybe he was targeted because he was in the military," she said.
The family has recently decided to go public, and have received help from Florida Senators Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio and Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. Olivia Hammar says that for her son's safety, now that they have gone public, "we need this to end fast."

"So far, Hammar's parents have gotten little help from U.S. diplomats."

No shit? This administration? Really, what do we expect? That the Socialist who doesn't give a fuck about the military anyway is going to work to get a veteran back from that shithole?

Let this be a warning to all Americans. Stay the fuck out of Mexico! It isn't safe even for their citizens (the ones who haven't jumped the fence). Our gubmint doesn't give a fuck where there is no political gain. Don't spend any money down there.

15 miles from the Texas border. His buddies should mount a rescue. Mexico doesn't have any AA defense I know of, hell the A-Team could bust him out. Time to bring this guy home.

Glad to see Fox News picked this up to spread the word. Our vacationer in chief wouldn't want to look pro gun by stepping in on this one.

Obama only sends our resources into Mexico (TWENTY-FIVE SS Agents) when his kid wants a six figure vacation. We could extract this Veteran with six SEALS.

This was no "mistake" our Border Patrol agents approved the weapon and provided a document for Mexico!

Hammer asked U.S. border agents what to do with the unloaded shotgun, which his family said belonged to his great-grandfather.
"They examined it, they weighed it, they said you have to fill out this form," his father, Jon Hammar, told The Associated Press in a phone interview Tuesday from his home near Miami.
But when the pair crossed the border and handed the paperwork to Mexican officials, they impounded the RV and jailed the men, saying it was illegal to carry that type of gun. Hammar's friend was later released because the gun did not belong to him.
The family's attorney said Mexican law prohibits civilians from carrying certain types of guns, like sawed-off shotguns, which can be more easily concealed. Mexican law prohibits shotguns with a barrel of less than 25 inches. Family attorney Eddie Varon-Levy said Mexican officials measured the barrel on Hammar's shotgun as 24 inches. It has not been sawed off.
Family members said the gun was purchased at Sears and blamed U.S. officials for telling Hammar he could bring it across the border in the first place.
Varon-Levy also questioned the way Mexican officials measured the gun, because the measurements can differ depending on where they are taken on the barrel.
Dealing with Mexican authorities, he said, has also been difficult. Varon-Levy said Hammar was brought to court a few weeks ago, where officials tried to convince him to plead guilty without a lawyer present.
Varon-Levy said he didn't show up because he was told there was a continuance. "I am fuming."
