OK so my department hired a bunch of people off of the lay off list which is fine. Now those people are beeing hired back including the ones who we just hired three weeks ago. To replace them they are calling for laterals rather than hire off of the civil service list. this is not the first time the chief has done this since he has been here. I think its unfair to the people who are waiting on the list who have lived in the city their whole life. Am I wrong by thinking this? :?:

It's a bitter pill to swallow but that's the system.
What dept is hiring laterals? What dept is hiring people back?
Why does it matter to you if your already a police officer for that dept?

Didn't the chief say that they were going to hire off the new list from here on out? I know lexington hired back a few of their officers after only a couple of weeks. Spend money on uniforms and other equipment and then they leave in four weeks. Should have taken people off the new list.

Sounds like the city is trying to save money...personally I've been passed over for laterals..and I was pretty pissed about it but oh well...thems the breaks....the only good thing was they got some problem children officers out of it which was better than revenge cause the chief decided after that they would no longer take laterals....Of course now we have a whole bunch of lay offs to deal with....AAAAHHHHHGGGG

Cole, what do you think is cheaper -- spending $300 to buy an officer new uniform, or paying thousands of dollars for a new recruit while they attend the 6-month academy? Think about it... a lateral or layoff can basically be on the road as soon as they have their patches sewn on.

LOYALTY screw the money issue.

laterals suck they are people who think its green grass on the other side of the fence. They lateral and guess what same job same type of people but now your the outsider hmm. Then they want to go back because it was much better at the other dept. oh damn my chief hates me and will not take me back wow suprise. So now the new chief and the dept. are stuck with an a$$hole. Bite the bullet get a new fresh face and attitude on your depts. Its called loyalty CHIEF'S LOYALTY they will stay with you and do a good job for you. Thanks I feel better

I take slight offense being a lateral. I left a Dept. where the Chief was being fired and half the Dept. hated one another and were testifying against one another.I didn't want to be around that b.s.. I went to greener pastures in neighboring town and 6 yrs. later have no regrets.Do you feel the same way if a Trooper changes Troops, are they disloyal?
