What are the requirements to apply in seeking employment as a Lakewood police agent?

Minimum requirements include:

Bachelor's degree in any discipline -- NO EXCEPTIONS
21 years of age at time of appointment
US Citizen or proper I-9 documentation
Other essential functions listed in the job description
he application packet consists of filling out:
City of Lakewood application
Personal History Statement (needs to be notarized)
Notarized Release of Information forms
Transcripts showing degree awarded
DD-214, if military background

Examinations include:
Oral Board Interview
Written exercise
Psychological examination
Background investigation
Medical/physical abilities (obstacle course)

You must also have no felony convictions at any time in your life; no hard drug use within three years; no marijuana use within 18 months; and no driver's license suspensions within three years. Recent drug use and other issues can disqualify you from the testing process. If disqualified for any reason, reapplication can be made at any time in the future.
The 2003 starting salary for a Police Agent is:

$3,420.25/month, with an excellent benefits package.
Eligible for salary increase at seven months and again at one year from start date. Salary increases at regular intervals based upon successful job performance.

Benefits include:

Health and dental plans to choose from; ample vacation and sick time; holiday pay; use of city recreation facilities; life insurance paid by the city; money purchase pension plan with full vesting at 5 years and a city contribution of 10 percent; deferred compensation plan; military leave; credit union; tuition assistance; employee assistance and wellness programs; free bus passes; and cell phone program.

The Police Academy

The academy is 22 weeks long, with classroom time usually 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.. It is located at the 1955 S. Old Kipling Street in Lakewood. During the academy portion of the training, you will receive instruction in firearms, arrest control, driving, the Colorado Criminal Code, Municipal Penal and Traffic Code, Spanish language for law enforcement, and Police Department policies and procedures, as well as in-depth training in officer safety.

Field training following the academy lasts approximately 14 weeks. Upon graduation, you are eligible for a salary increase. Ride-alongs are also encouraged, giving potential applicants a chance to observe the duties of a police agent up close. Call the Patrol Division at 303-987-7170 to schedule one.
