KINGSTON -

An intoxicated Maine man on his way to visit relatives in Pembroke was arrested Wednesday morning after hitting an officer working a paid road detail, police said.
Lyman E. Albert Jr., 53, of Lincoln, Maine, was charged with second-offense drunken driving, assault and battery on a police officer, driving to endanger and other offenses. When his blood-alcohol level was tested, it was nearly three times the legal limit, Kingston police Sgt. Zachary Potrykus said.
The officer who was hit, Darren Martin, was uninjured, Potrykus said. He was working a detail on Pembroke Street.
Potrykus said Martin noticed Albert's red Dodge pickup truck swerving and motioned for the driver to pull over. Smelling alcohol in the truck, Martin radioed for an on-duty officer. At that point, police say, Albert sped off.
Moments later, Potrykus said, the truck went by again, going in the other direction. Martin got in the truck's path, then tried to jump clear when it became apparent that the driver was not going to stop, Potrykus said. One of the truck's side-view mirrors hit Martin, the sergeant said.
Another officer assigned to the same detail, Sgt. Timothy Ballinger, followed Albert in his own car. Back-up officers were called as the pursuit headed into neighboring Pembroke, where Albert was eventually stopped and arrested.
Another driver told police that Albert had nearly hit another car head-on, Potrykus said.
According to The Bangor Daily News, Albert faced charges of driving a watercraft while intoxicated in the spring of 2006.
