A DeKalb police dog underwent a second surgery Thursday morning but was expected to recover from a shooting by an armed robbery suspect.
The dog, named Twan, was shot Wednesday afternoon, said police spokeswoman Mekka Parish.
Twosuspects had robbed the clerk and several customers at a gas station on Moreland Avenue at I-285 about 2 p.m. Wednesday, Parish said. The suspects fled into a wood line. Officers and the police dog were investigating in that area when someone opened fire.
The officers were not struck.
Twan had surgery Wednesday and required another operation Thursday, Parish said. But she said the dog is recovering.
One suspect was arrested several hours later after police and sheriff's deputies surrounded the area. Parish said police had the name of a second suspect who was being sought Thursday. She said authorities were not ready to release the names of either suspect.
In a related incident, two officers who were rushing to the scene of the Wednesday shooting were involved in a minor car accident. Parish said the officers were in a police car with the emergency lights and siren activated when there was a "sideswipe" collision with another vehicle. She said she did not know if either driver had been found at fault in the collision.
The police car struck a utility pole. Parish said the officers were taken to a hospital as a precaution but were soon released. A pedestrian at the scene suffered minor injuries, possibly from debris, Parish said.
