HOLYOKE - Holyoke's fire chief says a 14-year-old boy has been convicted of starting a nine-alarm blaze that destroyed a closed city paper mill earlier this summer.
Chief David LaFond says the boy, whose name was not released because he is a juvenile, was convicted Thursday and will be placed in state care until he is 18, the maximum allowable sentence.
More than 100 firefighters from 19 departments helped extinguish the June 9 blaze at the 313,000-square foot Parsons Paper Co.
LaFond has said the boy, who was 13 at the time, started the fire using paper and cardboard he found inside.
Two firefighters suffered ankle injuries and some were treated at the scene for heat stress.
The mill, which covered two city blocks, began operating in 1853 and closed in 2005.
