NEWARK, N.J. - New Jersey's state troopers want to be able to moonlight as lawyers if they choose.

Two organizations that represent troopers have sued Attorney General Anne Milgram over a change to state regulations. It prevents troopers who have earned law degrees from practicing law while they are still employed by state police.

Disciplinary action can range from suspension to removal.

The organizations say troopers aren't prohibited from practicing other professions.

The Attorney General's office says the regulations were amended in 2007 to eliminate potential conflicts of interest, adding they also apply to lawyers in the attorney general's office.
