KINGSTON -

A 26-year-old Plymouth man who was being taken to the Plymouth House of Correction, smashed his way out of a Kingston police cruiser on Route 3 and ran before being caught by the officer who was driving the cruiser.
Officer Alan Cabral was driving James C. Elias of 29 Sawmill Road at about 8 p.m. Thursday. About four hours earlier, Elias was arrested outside the Independence Mall in connection with a stolen iPod speaker system.
On the way to jail, Cabral asked Elias to stop banging on the window, Kingston Sgt. Zachary Potrykus said. Cabral slowed down and moved into the breakdown lane. Elias smashed through the window, went out head first, jumped the guard rail and ran about 150 feet down the highway with Cabral running after him, Potrykus said.
It did not take long before Cabral caught Elias and had him in custody.
Elias had been arrested earlier in the day on the road just outside the Independence Mall after a caller reported a man jumping in front of cars. Elias was charged with receiving stolen property and being a disorderly person.
He was carrying a speaker system for an iPod, which had been reported stolen from Sears, when he was arrested, police said.
Potrykus said when Elias was brought to the police station from the mall area, "he was definitely under the influence of drugs and alcohol" and required a medical evaluation.
Elias was taken to Jordan Hospital in Plymouth, treated and later returned to Kingston police station.
Potrykus said that it was unclear whether Elias used his head or the handcuffs on his wrists to smash the cruiser window.
Potrykus said that in addition to the earlier charges, Elias will be charged with malicious damage to a motor vehicle over $250, escape from lockup or custody and resisting arrest. He is expected to be arraigned today in Plymouth District Court.
Potrykus said Cabral was treated for minor injuries and released from Jordan Hospital in Plymouth and was expected to be out of work for a couple of days.
