HBPD is seeking accomplished, experienced Police Officers, with a successful work history in law
enforcement, and interested in continuing their successful careers with the HBPD. Starting salary is based on years of experience.
Information on time and location of tests, as well as scheduled Orientation Sessions are available on the "Test Instructions" sheet.

The Huntington Beach Police Department operates under a community policing philosophy with approximately
220 sworn positions. We provide officers opportunities to gain exposure in a wide variety of municipal police activities (e.g., helicopter,
K-9, Vice, Narcotics, beach detail, and downtown footbeat). We are proud to have our own Crime Lab, and were the first City in the
nation to operate a fully computerized Communications Command and Control Center.

• Currently employed, or have been employed within last 18 months, as a sworn police officer or deputy sheriff in a city, county,
special district, or State agency; with a minimum of one year experience and have successfully completed probationary period.
• Possess a current California Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate or Re-Certification.
• Have ability to perform essential functions of the job.
• Possess a valid California driver's license by the time of appointment.
• Applicants may NOT reapply within a six-month period from last testing.

• OUT OF-STATE POLICE OFFICERS: In Lieu of current California Basic P.O.S.T. certification, must be currently enrolled in the State of California P.O.S.T. Waiver
Process. Proof of acceptance from POST must be attached to job application.

SELECTION PROCESS: (Applicants may NOT reapply within a six-month period from last testing date.)
Applications are accepted at test site and will be reviewed for relevant qualifications. Refer to "Test Instructions" sheet for dates, times
and location. Please do not mail in applications. Qualifying applicants will participate in the selection process. The selection
components are noted below. Each component of the selection process must be passed in order to continue to the next.
Written Exam - Pass/Fail
Physical Agility Exam - Pass/Fail (This component is conducted immediately following the written exam.)
Oral Board Interview - Weighted 100%: (Oral boards are generally scheduled the week following the physical agility exam.)
Comprehensive Background Investigation and Polygraph Exam (Recent drug usage, theft or other illegal activity may be cause for
Police Chief's Interview
Psychological evaluation, pre-placement medical exam and drug screen (upon conditional offer of employment).
BENEFITS: Compressed work week, PERS retirement (3% @ 50; highest single year), vacation, time and half for holidays worked, sick leave (upon hire 60
days per illness), LTD Insurance, medical and dental insurance, bilingual pay (5% above base pay), education incentive plan, Sr. Officer plan, initial issue
uniforms and safety equipment, $1,200/yr uniform allowance after 1 yr of service, physical fitness program in which officers qualify 3 times/yr and receive
60 hrs time off. In addition, a unique job sharing option is available (restrictions apply).
