POSTED: 6:03 pm EST January 3, 2005
UPDATED: 6:11 pm EST January 3, 2005

A New Bedford man who claims he was defending his home was indicted on a murder charge Monday.

Police said Charles Chieppa shot and killed a man Chieppa said was trying to break into his house on Ashley Boulevard in June.

Frank Pereira Jr. was found dead on a sidewalk. Investigators are trying to determine if the suspect was actually inside Chieppa's house before he was shot.

A grand jury indicted Chieppa on a second-degree murder charge. Chieppa is scheduled to be in court next week.

If that happened in the town I work in, it wouldn't have been an issue at all. All of the houses have wheels on them. The "homeowner" would've just started up their 1983 Ford pick up and moved the crime scene a few feet. Case closed.
