Fall River -
A 28-year-old heroin dealer from the Ruggles Park area was sentenced to 10 years in state prison last week after pleading guilty to trafficking more than 100 grams of the drug.
Nicholas Denardo, of 843 Cherry St., was found in possession of 2,350 bags of heroin during a search of his home in February. Police confiscated 130 grams of heroin, dozens of pills and $11,000 in cash. He pleaded guilty Thursday in New Bedford Superior Court.
Judge Frances McIntyre sentenced Denardo to 10 to 12 years, in line with District Attorney Sam Sutter's no-plea-bargain policy on drug trafficking of more than 100 grams, said spokesman Gregg Miliote. Denardo's attorney told the judge his client sold drugs to support his heroin habit and he asked for a shorter sentence.
Denardo had opportunities to overcome his heroin addiction, McIntyre said, calling his record "a tragedy."
"Heroin is such a damaging addiction," she said.
The District Attorney's Office's policy is to not let defendants bargain for a lesser sentence by pleading guilty. Drug trafficking of 100 grams or more carries a minimum 10-year sentence, and trafficking of more than 200 grams results in a minimum of 15 years if convicted.
