Glock 30S thoughts

I've been considering upgrading my off duty G26, wanting a larger caliber. I've just ordered a blue-label Glock 30S from Barney's Police Supply just down the road in Gulfport. ETD anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, sadly.

Anyone else have one? I'd be interested in holster recommendations. Some of my existing Glock holsters may fit but I won't know until I get it home. How about ammo? I hear good things about the Federal 230 grain +P bonded hollow point LE load, though it seems hard to find.

What .45 ammo are depts up there carrying?

I used to have a G36 and I was very impressed with its accuracy and ease of carry, the dimensions of the G30S are very similar so I'd say it's a solid choice. I used to carry Speer Gold Dot +P 200 grain JHP
Great choice, I have a friend dying for one...but not willing to pay the $900+ to get one in MA.
The 30S has the slim 36 slide and double stack mag. From looking briefly it seems its unique in terms of holster fit, meaning for a decent holster you'd have to order one specifically made for the 30S. Massad Ayoob has a good review here: http://dailycaller.com/2013/06/21/massad-ayoob-the-new-glock-30s-in-45acp/
"The 30S being new, there was no dedicated leather for it at the time of this writing. I didn't have Glock 36 holsters on hand, but would be surprised if the wider frame of the 30 didn't cause a fit problem. Since the "footprint" of the 30S is similar to that of the popular Glock 19/23/32 series, I tried the 30S in some of those.
The results were mixed. It fit, well, "OK" in an inside the waistband Ted Blocker scabbard made for standard-frame Glocks. It was very snug in Glock's own low-priced plastic Sport/Combat holster for the 9mm- and .40-size pistols, more so than I was comfortable with. I found myself just carrying it in dedicated Glock 30 holsters by Galco and Ted Blocker. It worked fine from them, and carried comfortably. But, then, I'm used to carrying a Glock 30."

My duty gun is a G21 and we use federal HST +P 230 grain hollow points. It's nasty stuff and gets the job done.

Also I carry a G30 as my off duty and the G30S fits in my bravo concealment IWB well enough, but it would be worth buying a new holster if I ended up selling the G30 imo.
Ironically, almost all of the high speed operators on the training circuit are moving to 9mm. :D

I thought it was called S because it had a slimmer back strap to trigger profile? Its what kept me away from it.
$900? Really? I hesitate to say what I'm paying, but it's... well, it's a LOT less.

I think the S refers to the slimmer slide. Consensus seems to be some G19 holsters will fit, others won't. I don't mind getting a new holster or two, but don't want to spend $ until I know which ones I need to replace.

Maybe I oughta sell my G26 here instead of locally. Seems the markup is pretty steep in Da Commonwealth.

I think this is a combination of several factors, one of the primary being that 9mm is traditionally much cheaper than .45. Several classes I've taken the students had to supply the instructor with demonstration ammo, and usually they'll use 9mm to spare students too much expense. Also, it is the most popular cartridge with the civilian shooting market. The low recoil in 9mm also makes it an easy platform for demonstration, especially if you're constantly teaching.

My own thoughts are that, with the right round, the 9mm is fine for duty or carry use. Its the cartridge I carry the most off-duty. But, all things being equal, the larger hole you can put in the bad guy, the better. Police gunfights are still, on average, very low round count affairs, and if I could only launch one or two bullets at a bad guy, I want a really big round making the introduction.

Interestingly enough, I recently read an article by Pat Rogers outlining the reasons he switched from a .45 ACP to a 9mm carry gun. All of his excellent reasoning aside, the one "read-between-the-lines" moment I had reading the article was that he was retired as a law enforcement officer. Meaning while he was running-and-gunning on the streets, he carried a .45. When he retired to full-time trainer, he switched to a 9mm. Message received.

Always love to see another Pat Rogers fan!
Dan, the Glock 30sf (short frame) has the reduced backstrap to trigger.
