Teaneck fire officials said a 10-year-old girl died, while her 14-year-old brother was taken to the hospital and was reported to be in critical condition. The girl's mother and a family friend were also injured, but their injuries are not considered life-threatening.
The 22-year-old driver of the Mercedes has been charged with felony murder.
The Bergen Record reported that the 10-year-old girl was killed when a stolen car smashed into another passenger vehicle tearing it in half late Thursday afternoon.
The newspaper reported that the chase began in Bergenfield with patrol cars from Bergenfield, Tenafly and Cresskill. The police were pursuing a stolen Mercedes Benz.
The stolen Mercedes slammed into a silver Honda Accord in New Milford, splitting it in half. The Mercedes had outrun police cars from town to town when it smashed into the car on New Bridge Road.
The victims were ejected from the the Accord. Firefighters said the children didn't have a chance.
"It (the Accord) was torn apart," said Nancy Bogert of the Teaneck Fire Department. "One car came down the hill and tore it apart. I really don't know how or why."
Investigators said the chase stretched from Bergenfield to Tenafly to Cressfield, before the Mercedes smashed the Accord, and also hit a landscaping truck.
Neighbors said they were shaken by the impact of what happened.
"It's very frightening," said Teaneck resident Talia Farbowitz. "I have a 12-year-old son -- he could have been crossing that street. It's very, very frightening."
