Applicant Requirements:

Applicants for the police examination must be between the age of 21 to 45, or age 49 with four years of military service. The applicant must pass a written examination. The scores will be valid for two years from the date of the examination. The written examination plus an oral exam will give a total score which places the applicant on the respective roster according to test ranking. Study guides will be provided to assist in preparation for the examination. It is also recommended that applicants make use of other Law Enforcement examination related study materials to further assist with preparation.

Police department requirements for hiring from the roster includes a physical agility (http://www.apostc.state.al.us/agility.htm) test. If you pass this test, the following will be scheduled:

Background Check.
Polygraph Test.
Drug Test
Psychological Evaluation.
Physical Exam.
Vision and Hearing Exam.

Salary & Benefits:

Starting pay for Rookie Police Officers is $12.32 an hour ($25,644 per year). After completion of the probationary period, pay will increase to $13.82 an hour ($28,745 per year).

Upon being accepted as a member of the Gadsden Police Department`s team of professional officers, you will be sent to the Northeast Alabama Police Academy in Jacksonville, AL. (Alabama Certified Police Officers may not have to attend.) You will be paid as a Rookie Police Officer during your time in the police academy. The academy currently lasts for a twelve week period. Sometime before or after successfully graduating the police academy you will be trained on specific departmental policies and procedures at the department`s Pierce Range Training facility.

Opportunities for the new Police Officer:

After your hired, graduate the police academy, pass our departmental training and are released from the mandatory probationary period you will have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of duties and specialized units. Some of which are listed below:

Patrol Division - This is the single most important role of any police department. The Patrol Division is the backbone of any police department
Detective Division
Traffic Unit
CAPP FORCE - Community And Police Partnership.
COP - Community Oriented Policing. Responsible for the Housing Communities and surrounding areas.
Narcotics Unit
Nature of Work:

(This is general duty police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances.)

Work involves responsibility for the protection of life and property, prevention of crime, apprehension of criminals, direction of vehicular and pedestrian traffic, and the general enforcement of laws and ordinances in a designated area on an assigned shift. Work is performed in accordance with departmental rules and regulations and normally consist or routine patrol, preliminary investigations, and traffic regulation duties which may be performed in cruiser cars, solo or three-wheel motorcycles, or on foot. Work involves an element of personal danger and employees must be able to act without direct supervision and exercise discretion in meeting emergencies. Assignments as well as general and special instruction are received from superior officers, who review work methods and results through personal inspections, reports, and discussions. When initially employed in the class, officers are required to attend a formal police academy for a period of twelve weeks within six months. This position is classified as Non-Exempt.

Examples of Work Performed:

Patrols a designated area of the city on foot, on motorcycle, or in a radio equipped car to preserve law and order, to prevent and discover the commission of crime, to direct traffic, and to enforce motor vehicle operation and parking regulations.
Answers calls and complaints involving fire, automobile accidents, robberies, and other misdemeanors and felonies; serves as desk officer on an assigned shift.
At the scene of a crime: administers first aid, conducts preliminary investigations, gathers evidence, obtains witnesses, makes arrests and takes prisoners to jail; testifies as a witness in court.
When assigned special duty with accident investigation squad: responds to accident reports, interviews witnesses and gathers information, makes investigations to determine cause of accident; prepares detailed accident investigation reports.
Serves as identification officer: takes and classifies fingerprints, identifies and gathers and preserves evidence, takes and develops photographs, and operates NCIC terminal.
Interviews persons with complaints and injuries; attempts to make proper disposition or directs them to proper authorities.
Gives advice on laws and ordinances as well as general information to the public; when assigned, participates in the public relations program.
Performs related work as assigned.

Requirements of Work:

Some knowledge of the geography of the city and the location of areas requiring special police services.
Ability to understand and carry out detailed oral and written instructions.
Ability to prepare clear and concise reports.
Ability to enforce the law with firmness, tact, and impartiality.
Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.
Physical strength and agility and freedom from disabling defects; and ability to meet such specific physical requirements as may be established by competent authority.
Desirable Experience and Training:

Any combination of experience and training equivalent to graduation from senior high school or equivalent.

Necessary Special Requirement:

Persons employed in this class must have reached the age of 21 years at the time of appointment.
Must possess a valid Alabama Motor Vehicle Operator’s License
