Police shot a felon Thursday afternoon after a five-hour stakeout at a Tulsa,Oklahoma apartment building near a preschool.

Larandall Lamar Hill, 34, was shot when authorities tried to arrest him in connection with an overnight home invasion and stabbing, police spokesman Officer Leland Ashley said.

Shots rang out shortly before 5 p.m. in the 2400 block of East Fifth Place, near Tulsa Educare, an early education center for low-income children.

No one besides Hill was injured.

An ambulance took the man to St. John Medical Center in serious condition, EMSA spokeswoman Tina Wells said.

Police said Hill was conscious and talking when he was hospitalized.

Several police agencies — including a fugitive warrant squad — were searching for Hill on Thursday after an overnight burglary and stabbing.

Eight other warrants previously had been issued for his arrest, Ashley said.

Court documents show that he was convicted of using a firearm to commit a felony and of possessing a controlled substance with intent to distribute in 1993.

After a handful of other crimes, he was convicted of escaping from prison in 2005.

"Yes, he's known as a bad guy," Ashley said.

The events leading to the shooting were unclear Thursday night, and detectives were still interviewing the officer involved, Ashley said.

Investigators did not find any weapons at the scene, he said.

Police said Hill underwent surgery Thursday evening and that he will be under a police watch while he recovers.
