Hello everyone
I have been thinking of moving to the Franklin county area and I was wondering if any of you knew of any good police departments in that area. I was thinking of looking into the towns of Sunderland,Deerfield,Ashfield,Charlemont,Buckland,Bernardston,Northfield and Shelburne. Also any others that you might recomend.Iam looking for a good department that will give someone with the reserve academy a job with plenty of hours. I have looked at a few in Berkshire county and it seems the only ones I liked are not hiring anyone. A few other seemed to be short on gear some to the point where officer are not allowed to carry batons. I need to stay in the western mass area any help you gs can give me would be great.
Thanks

Stay away from Franklin County unless you go to Montague, Greenfield, or Orange. These are civil service towns with civil service protection. the small towns in FC you will be an at will employee and subject to removal at the selectmens discretion. I know from experience. Stay clear. The only small town with a union there is sunderland, and they're not hiring right now.

Hi Sarge: Shutesbury is teamsters and Leverett will be conducting their secret ballot per Mass Labor Relations guidelines to form the "Leverett Police Assn" next week. After Leverett's expected unanimous vote in favor, they will be allowed to enter into contract negotiations with the select board. Also, they can't be fired without just cause by the board which was moving in that direction cause they hate the current OIC who is doing a super job and enjoys high support from the town residents, except the local rats who work for other town departments, and who never miss an opportunity to go to town hall and make vicious, unsubstantiated complaints against the PD. Just last week, one of them from the fire Dept, who the PD summoned for committing a felony (found guilty) a few months ago, went to the board in executive (secret) session to complain about the PD not arresting on 3 separete occasions operators for OUI. Now, as you know, executive sessions for discipline reasons must have those being disciplined/investigated actually present. Hmmm! Stay tuned. This shall be fun. LPD didn't have PC for arrest after these accidents, but the select board asked for LPD's police reports to investigate anyway, experts that they are. Never mind that this fire dept donkey has a habit of showing up drunk to fires and other callouts. I suppose that makes him an expert then. I wonder when he's going to be investigated by the board for "conduct unbecoming a fireman" according to the town's printed policy? Every time OIC SGT Ting farts, they try to discipline him, then they back away, when he shows up with his $500/hour lawyer, expert on labor discrimination. Watch the papers, this is going to be a super mess for the town. :shock:

Hey Brother;

Been a while since I've been on the site. Back on active duty. I didn't know Shutesbury was Teamsters. Best thing Sunderland ever did in my opinion. Yeah Kelson's getting a raw deal. It's typical Franklin Co/small town BS. I don't miss it. You obviously know who I am. So, you know about Erving, and getting screwed in Whately becaue I disagreed with Swifty! Anyway, this Dept of Defense job is the greatest. Great $$, bennies, and no small town politics. Oh well. Good luck in Leverett and Shutebury. Be interesting to see about the merger too. Oh yeah, as for the comment of not being able to investigate crimes. OIC Swift used to do the same thing to us. It's someting in the water out there. :wink: :lol: Good luck Bro.
