Four new Salem firefighters sworn in
By Chris Cassidy
Staff writer

SALEM - The Fire Department is getting younger.
Four new recruits - all between the ages of 23 and 28 - were sworn in last week before the City Council and a crowd of family, friends and fellow firefighters. They replace four firefighters who retired earlier this year.
Kevin O'Boyle, Richard Thomas, Aaron Bingham and Manuel Ataide are all in the middle of 12 weeks of training at the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy in Stow and will join the department after completing the course.
"They'll be back in time for Haunted Happenings," fire Chief David Cody said.
All four recruits are veterans, having returned from either Iraq or Afghanistan. Thomas joins his father, a Salem firefighter for the last 25 years. Thomas' grandfather was also on the Salem Fire Department for 32 years.
"They're all great guys," Cody said. "They're all gung ho, ready to go, and we love having them."
Also, firefighter Robert Cook was promoted to lieutenant and sworn in Thursday night.
