Suspect A Business Student Last Spring

ORONO, Maine -- University of Maine police said a former student faces felony charges after gaining access to computers of students.

UMaine police, working with the Maine State Police Computer Crimes Task Force, Lewiston Police Department and Secret Service, arrested James Wieland, of Lewiston, on charges related to privacy invasion.

Wieland, 26, was a business student until last spring.

Police now believe that Wieland may have gained access to as many as 1,000 UMaine e-mail accounts. He used the pirated e-mail to fool computer users into opening attachments that installed a program that recorded keystrokes.

UMaine Police Chief Noel March said police do not know Wieland's motivation or what he did with the information. So far, there have been no reports of identity theft.
