HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - Students and teachers at Mater Dolorosa Catholic School in Holyoke feel angry and violated. They couldn't eat lunch on Monday because someone stole all the food, along with thousands of dollars in electronic equipment over the weekend.
The 14-year veteran Principal, Sister Corinne Gurka, said she knew something was wrong as soon as she walked in the door.
"There were pretzels thrown all over the floor and crushed," she said.
And the news only got worse. The entire school had been ransacked and almost all the electronics stolen. And whoever stole two digital cameras, five televisions, and six computers, also seemed to have a sweet tooth.
"There was a jar on my teacher's desk with candy in it, and they stole all the candy, and put all the candy wrappers on the floor in the classroom," second grader Conor Allyn said.
Perishable food was also missing. The cafeteria supervisor, William Allyn, said there wasn't even enough food left in the fridge to serve the student's lunch on Monday. He had to run out and buy more food, just to get the children through lunch.
"You think they would just grab things like cameras and computers. I was just shocked to see that they would take cases of chicken, milk, and cartons of juice and stuff like that," Allyn said.
Students and teacher are just hoping police will catch whoever's responsible. If you have any information, you're asked to call the Holyoke Police Criminal Invesitgations Unit at 413-322-6940.
